Humans are affected by five malaria parasite species: Plasmodium falciparum, P. Because LBW and maternal anemia are involved in increasing child mortality, it is fundamental to understand the pathophysiology of malaria during pregnancy. The main malaria sequelae in pregnancy constitute low birth weight (LBW), maternal anemia, intrauterine growth retardation, and death. Even though malaria represents a risk for people in endemic areas, the risk increases in some vulnerable groups, especially in pregnant women. Depending on the levels of parasitemia and species of parasites, individuals can present mild or severe symptoms. According to the WHO, in 2019 were reported 409,000 malaria-associated deaths, and 67% of them were children under 5 years old. Furthermore, malaria is a public health problem because of its high morbidity and mortality rates and devastating consequences on pregnant women and children. Malaria is an important disease as it threaten ed nearly 57 cases per 1000 individuals in 2019, and the incidence has decreased slowly (rate 2%) from 2015 to 2019.
